How I Got Here

I’m a regular girl (*ahem*, a 40+ yo “girl’), with a regular job, and all of the regular trials and tribulations that happen in an overall pretty good life.

I painted my toenails for years and years – as soon as the sandals came out in the spring, my tootsies were done until the boots came back in the fall.  Other than here and there over the years, though, I never really painted my fingernails.  I would do them a couple of times, then they would break and peel and bubble, and I would cut them off and forget about it.  So I gave up, kept them looking generally neat and didn’t worry about much else.  My small collection of polishes lasted FOREVER, occasionally supplemented by a new mini if a color caught my eye – for my next pedi, of course.

Then, over a span of a few weeks, I had to go to Walgreen’s several times – and apparently, I always cut through the makeup section.  They were in the midst of a huge Sinful Colors push and had, like, 5 big displays.  The colors were GORGEOUS!  It was fall, and all of these crazy greens and grays and blues, and smoky cremes kept catching my eye.  So, I bought a few.  And then I bought a few more – they’re only $1.99, right?  I don’t even have to justify that!  Then they had a $.99 sale and I BOUGHT THEM ALL!  Maybe not all, but suddenly my modest polish collection was, um, bigger.

THEN, I went online.  And I found nail art.  And I found blogs!  And there was this whole freaking world of crazy polish nuts (I mean that in a good way)!  And there were gradients, and water marbles, and dotting tools, and TECHNIQUES, and advice about how not to let polish ruin my nails, and there were SO MANY COLORS!!!

Even then my freakout might have run its’ course, but I posted a pic of my first sponge gradient on facebook, and a friend of mine living overseas saw it.  Turns out she had ALSO JUST started doing her nails for the first time in ever, and had gotten into all of the online resources, and so we basically started feeding each others’ addiction and haven’t stopped.  She visited last fall, soon after all of this started, and we went polish shopping, no lie, like 5 times!

So that’s how it all began, a little less than a year ago.  Along the way, I decided to start the blog.  It’s mostly a way to share the fun and be a part of the vast polish community – and hopefully get to interact with some of the amazing bloggers I’ve been following.  I may not have the best photos, my cuticles still get scraggly sometimes despite my best efforts, and I will never be a daily poster, but here I am!  If I have the opportunity to entertain or inform along the way, assuming I manage to get a follower or two, even better!  Enjoy!
